I came to know Mr. Li in my capacity as an adjunct associate professor in NYU-Poly’s Finance and Risk Engineering Department. I came to know him rather well as “Jack”, the American name he chose for himself. The fact that he chose such a nickname speaks well about his ability to deal with a foreign culture, because it shows a willingness to help out the many native born Americans who, sadly, have trouble with Chinese names. He was first one of the few “A” students in my numerical methods in finance class, then my TA, and then my thesis student. I found him to be so reliable that I was happy to respond when he looked to me for career advice. I found out that, in fact, his real passion was more the application of mathematics to practical problems than finance, per se. After a series of long talks, we came to the conclusion that one direction he could pursue was the broader study quantitative issues in business when we both realized that the financial services industry is not a promising one in which to start a career right now.
I think it’s fair to say that Jack was one of the top 10% of the students in the program. He was such a good choice for a TA that I made it a point to ask for him again. I will soon find out what he’s like as a junior colleague, because we are writing a research paper together, based on the results of his Master’s thesis.
I also hired my current TA based on Jack’s recommendation. This person is also working out well, even though he didn’t take my course before becoming its TA as Jack did. This suggests that Jack is good for finding the right person for the right job, which surely reflects well on his suitability for a program such as yours.
One other thing I forgot to mention above: Jack tells me that he was a finance major as an undergraduate, but he seems to have the facility with math of a math major (my own academic background). He tells me that he also did well in the broader field of economics as an undergraduate. I believe him because I can say for sure that he really does understand quantitative finance.
My primary reason for checking STRONGLY RECOMMEND , as opposed to merely RECOMMEND, in spite of checking ABOVE AVERAGE, rather than OUTSTANDING, for most specific traits is that SOMEONE at a business school should really understand quant finance, as Jack does.
